Mumbles Lighthouse © Alex ThomasWalking by the sea is so bracing, especially in South Wales in January! The featured picture in today's thumbnail is the Mumbles Head lighthouse, which was built in 1794 to warn ships of the dangers of nearby Mixon Shoal. The picture was taken by Alex Thomas, just a couple of weeks into 2004, from the eastern side of Bracelet Bay. From the sultry August heat of the High Desert Southwest of the USA, hoping an electrical storm might clear the air, this looks so inviting.

One of the pictures Alex took on his walk caught our eye: we liked the contrasting styles and colors of the two blocks of buildings. We cropped the image tightly to enhance the effect. We hope Alex will forgive us for experimenting with his images. Visit Alex to enjoy this walk, and other trips out and about in the area.
